Deidra Demens, Level II Iyengar Teacher

Iyengar yoga is named after and was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar who was a direct disciple of T. Krishnamacharya. Together with Pattabhi Jois (who developed Ashtanga yoga) he was partly responsible for bringing the practice of modern yoga, as we know it now, to the West. Iyengar Yoga focuses on three aspects: alignment, sequencing and timing, and encourages the use of props to assist students within an asana without putting them at risk of injury. Effective alignment can help to achieve balance between body, mind and breath.

Join Deidra Demens for a four class series that will introduce to you the practice of Iyengar Yoga. This series is open to beginning students and students with more experience that are interested in refining the fundamental poses to build a foundation for their practice.

In this series, the foundations of Iyengar Yoga will be taught mostly in the standing poses. The standing poses introduce students to the outer sheath of the body (arms, legs, fingers, toes, wrist, elbows, knees, etc), and by spreading awareness to the outer body students learn various muscle movements such as extension, contraction, rotation, expansion, abduction, and adduction. This knowledge of the outer body works as a guide to go inwards. In this series students will learn proper actions and movements to help refine standing poses in preparation for the intermediate and advanced poses that will come later.

Four classes for you to keep!

  • Class 1: Refine the lateral standing poses.

  • Class 2: Refine the standing forward bends.

  • Class 3: Refine shape and direction of standing poses, foundations of shoulder stand.

  • Class 4: Refining balancing poses, deeper action of shoulder stand.

ABOUT DEIDRA
Deidra Demens was introduced to Yoga in 2004. While studying at The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago Illinois, Deidra explored various styles of Yoga, movement and breathing exercises as creative ways of expression and began teaching in 2011.

After taking her first Iyengar class, Deidra was amazed at how much she learned in just one class. “I needed a foundation for my practice and teaching, I found it in Iyengar Yoga. The instructions were clear and precise. My interest in Yoga was elevated. My practice transformed, and so my journey began.” – Deidra Demens

Deidra enrolled in the Teacher Training at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York and became certified at Intro I/ II level in November 2017 and became certified at the Intermediate Junior I level in October 2019. Deidra continues to study with her primary teachers Lara Warren (her mentor) and James Murphy and is grateful for their support and inspiration.

Deidra’s approach to teaching is comprehensive and fun, her classes are dynamic and engaging. Through demonstration and detailed alignment Deidra seeks to both challenge and inspire her students.

The severity of practice by itself is not the yardstick for measuring success. A pure mind and a right intention are necessary. Yoga must be done gradually. The yoga pose is not the goal. Becoming flexible or standing on your hands is not the goal. The goal is to create space where you were once stuck. To unveil layers of protection you have built around your heart. To appreciate your body and become aware of the mind and the noise it creates. To make peace with who you are. The goal is to love... well, you. Shift your focus and your heart will grow
